4. Perception and Action Flashcards
Where is the primary visual cortex?
At the back of the brain in the occipital lobe.
What does the dorsal stream do?
Contributes to the control of movement and motion processing.
What does the dorsal stream do?
Contributes to the control of movement and motion processing.
Where is the dorsal stream?
Up
Occipital cortex -> Temporal cortex -> Parietal cortex
What does the ventral stream do?
Object recognition
Wheres is the ventral stream?
Down.
Occipital cortex -> Temporal cortex
Which stream is the most dominant?
Ventral
What does damage to the ventral stream lead to?
Visual agnosia, prosopagnosia, achromatopsia
What does damage to the dorsal stream lead to?
Motion blindness
What is visual agnosia?
Inability to recognise objects due to damage to the ventral stream
Describe patient DF
Has visual agnosia so cannot recognise objects or report their orientation yet her hands orient correctly to grasp them.
Describe patient GS
Suffered a stroke resulting in visual agnosia, cannot name household objects but could describe them and identify using other senses (touch, sound, smell or sound)
Which area is responsible for face processing?
The right fusiform gyrus referred to as the fusiform face area (FFA). Discovered using fMRI.
What is prosopagnosia?
Inability to recognise faces due to damage to the right fusiform gyrus of the ventral stream.
What is achromatopsia?
Inability to see colours due to damage to the ventral stream.
