4 - Ortho/OS interface Flashcards
What soft tissue procedures are requested by orthodontics?
- frenoplasty/frenectomy
- buccal apically repositioned flap for impacted canine
- palatal open exposure for impacted canine
- impacted premolar exposures
What hard tissue procedures are requested by orthodontics?
- impacted canines exposures and extraction
- impacted premolar exposures extraction
- submerged retained primary teeth
- implants/mini-implants
- orthognathic surgery
What are the different treatment options for impacted canines?
- monitor
- XLA
- surgical exposure and orthodontic alignment
- transplant
What can be used to maintain an open exposure?
Gauze soaked in Whitehead’s varnish
What are indications for canine transplant?
- cannot get a result from exposure and traction
- potential danger to adjacent teeth
- space available with premolar XLA
- older patient seeking quick treatment
How do you retain the transplanted tooth in the correct position?
- manage as avulsed tooth
- flexible splint
- tooth requires RCT before/after procedure
When exposing a buccally placed why does using an apically repositioned flap yield a better result?
Attached mucosa is retained and forms the gingival margin that is brought down as the canine comes into the line of the arch
Describe the flap design for an apically repositioned flap.
- 3 sided flap
- relieving incisions fairly parallel
- flap should be sutured down with fold in mucosa to form new margin
What type of canine exposure typically uses gold chain?
Closed
What are the different types of frenoplasty?
- V-Y frenoplasty
- Z-plasty
Describe a V-Y frenoplasty.
- triangle incision ot remove frenum
- suture the three sides together from the middle
- suture sides together
Describe a Z-plasty.
- z shaped incision
- rotate the sides of the flaps
- suture in place
What is the function of mini-implants?
Anchorage
What material is used for mini-implants and why?
- stainless steel
- does not fuse to bone like Titanium
- held in by friction, can be removed when required
How do you place a mini implant?
- LA
- create access using probe
- screw in implant
