4. intro to MSK Flashcards
what is juvenile idiopathic arthritis (an inflammatory arthropathy)
autoimmune RA below the age of 16
what is seronegative spondyloarthropathies (an inflammatory arthropathy)
family of disorders that include:
ankylosing spondylitis (AS)
psoriatic arthritis (PsA)
Inflammatory bowel disease ((IBD)
what is crystal arthritis (an inflammatory arthropathy)
- acute calcium pyrophosphate (CPP)
- causes pain and swelling in joints (esp knees)
- crystals of mineral calcium rub against soft tissue
what is septic arthritis (an inflammatory arthropathy)
joint infection/infective arthritis
-redness, heat and pain in single joint
-less able to move the joint
most common cause = bacterial infection with staphylococcus
what is the early arthritis referral
suspected RA must be referred to specialist care within 3 working days
examples of non inflammatory arthropathy
juvenile idiopathic arthritis
seronegtive spondyloarthropathies
crystal arthritis
septic arthritis
key example of inflammatory vs non inflammatory rheumatology
RA vs osteoarthritis
examples of connective tissue diseases (multi system disease)
SLE
Sjogren’s
scleroderma
dermatomyositis
examples of vasculitis diseases (multi system disease)
-ANCA (anti-neutrophilic cytoplasmic antibody)
bechet’s
takayasu
polymyalgi/giant cell arthritis
what is ANCA (multi system disease)
anti neutrophilic cytoplasmic antibody.
- targets neutrophils
- involvement in pulmonary, kidney, skin and nerve
presentation of ANCA
lost hearing, trouble walking, unresolved pneumonia, coughing up blood, acute renal failure
what is relapsing polychondritis (multi system disease)
inflammation of connective tissue
- painful ears
- stidor (airway cartilage affected)
what investigations would you conduct for a rheumatological diagnosis
- ESR/CRP
- FBC
- antibodies: ANA, RF, CCP, ENA, dsDNA, ANCA
- imagine
- other: urine PCR, synovial fluid analysis, biopsy
