8
Q

What is simple coal worker’s pneumoconiosis?

A

Dust accumulates around bronchioles
Coal macules and nodules are found in lungs
Affects upper lobes
Can cause emphysema

16
Q

What is asbestosis?

A

Asbestos fibres surrounded by macrophages and coated with iron: dumbbell shaped fibres called ferruginous bodies
Cause interstitial fibrosis and honeycombing of the lungs
Starts in lower lobes and moves up

17
Q

What is hypersensitivity pneumonitis?

A

Type 3 hypersensitivity to organic inhaled antigens
Progression to type 4 leads to pulmonary fibrosis
Onset is 6-8 hours after exposure

18
Q

What is included under idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis?

A

Sarcoidosis

Langerhans cell histiocytosis

19
Q

What effects does sarcoidosis have on the lungs?

A

Bihilar lymphadenopathy

Interstitial inflammation progessing to diffuse interstitial fibrosis

20
Q

What are the blood results in sarcoidosis?

A

High calcium, Alk Phos and ACE

21
Q

What method is used to sample lymph nodes from the hilum of the lung?

A

EBUS-TBNA

22
Q

What is the pathogeneis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis?

A

Alveolar wall injury causes interstitial oedema, accumulation of inflammatory cells
Heals by fibrosis

23
Q

What is the hallmark of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis?

A

Heterogenous appearance: areas of fibrosis and inflammation alternating with normal lung

24
Q

What can be heard in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis when auscultating?

A

Velcro crackles

25
Q

What is ARDS?

A

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
Reduced gas exchange caused by diffuse injury to alveolar-capillary barrier
Alveolus filled with proteinaceous fluid and inflammatory cells

26
Q

What are the direct causes of ARDS?

A

Pneumonia

Aspiration of gastric contents

27
Q

What are the indirect causes of ARDS?

A

Sepsis

Severe trauma
