How common is it?
A
Most common type of cancer in the UK
1 in 8 women
Rare in men

Who does it affect?
A
Most commonly >50s but can occur in all ages

What causes it?
A
Oestrogen stimulates hyperplasia of cells (in ducts, lobules or elsewhere)

What risk factors are there?
A
Increasing age FH, previous breast cancer Tall, overweight / obese Previous benign lump Alcohol

What signs may the patient have on examination?
A
Palpable lump in breast / armpit
Peau d’orange

What other conditions might present similarly?
A
Benign lesions (cyst, fibroadenomas) Secondary breast cancer

How would you investigate?
A
Triple assessment - mammogram and biopsy

What treatments are there?
A
Surgery followed by radio/chemotherapy
Sometimes hormone targeted treatment

What types are there?
A
In situ (DCIS) Invasive (triple negative, inflammatory, Paget's disease, Phyllodes tumour, angiosarcoma)
