4. Benign neoplasms Flashcards
1
Q
Types of benign breast neoplasms
A
- Fibroadenoma
2. Phyllodes Tumour
2
Q
Definition of fibroadenoma
A
Fibroepithelial tumour arising from intralobular stroma of breast
3
Q
Epidemiology of fibroadenoma
A
Highest prevalence in young women (peak incidence around 25 years of age)
4
Q
Morphology of fibroadenoma
A
- Grossly:
- Firm well-defined mobile lump (mouse in the breast)
- May be multiple & bilateral - Histologically:
- Proliferation of glandular & stromal elements (pericanalicular or intracanalicular pattern)
- Cellular, delicate myxoid stroma (resembles normal intralobular stroma of breast)
5
Q
Clinical features of fibroadenoma
A
- Slow-growing tumour
- Risk of malignancy based on degree of epithelial
hyperplasia - Can recur, may occasionally regress spontaneously
6
Q
Definition of phyllodes tumour
A
Fibroepithelial tumour arising from intralobular stroma of breast
7
Q
Morphology of phyllodes tumour
A
Histologically:
- Contains both glandular & stromal components
- Frondlike (leaf like) architecture
- Stroma is more cellular than that in fibroadenoma
- Not fully circumscribed, parts of tumour going into adjacent tissue (hence require 1 cm margin in excision to prevent recurrence)
8
Q
Clinical features of phyllodes tumour
A
Higher risk of malignancy than fibroadenoma
- In which it will become a sarcoma, with the proliferating stromal elements overrunning the epithelial components of the original benign tumour
