Clinical presentations of breast disease
A
- Pain (Mastalgia, Mastodynia)
- Discrete Palpable Masses
- Nipple Discharge
- Lumpiness

Pain in the breast
A
May be cyclic (as with menses) or non-cyclic
- Cyclic pain usually diffused, typically not pathological
- Non-cyclic pain usually localized, mostly indicates a benign condition (rupture cyst, trauma, infection), but may sometimes indicate breast cancer

Discrete palpable masses
A
Masses become palpable beyond at 2cm

Differentials for discrete palpable mass
A
- Cysts
- Fibroadenomas
- Invasive carcinomas (more likely in older women)

Distribution of location of breast cancers
A
- 50% occur in upper outer quadrant
- 20% occur in central subareolar region
- 10% in each remaining quadrant

Benign causes of nipple discharge
A
- prolactinoma, hypothyroidism, oral contraceptives → milky discharge / galactorrhea
- solitary large duct papillomas, cysts, pregnancy → bloody / serous discharge

Malignant causes of nipple discharge, especially so if discharge is:

- Spontaneous & unilateral
