4. Alterations & mixtures Flashcards
How can alteration problems be solved?
With a mixture table:
Each row represents the original amount of an ingredient, its change, and the total
Each column adds down to a total
How to solve more difficult alteration problems?
Using Algebra
Assigning variables to unknown quantities
Mixture table for mixture problems (two mix)
- components mix A
- components mix B
Total
Solving mixture problems that are PUQs (no specific quantities)
1) with mixture table:
let the total quantity of one of the mixtures equal 100,
and let the total quantity of the other mixture equal x
Solving mixture problems that are PUQs (no specific quantities)
1) with mixture table:
let the total quantity of one of the mixtures equal 100,
and let the total quantity of the other mixture equal x
2) RAF Shortcut
* Range
* Absolute (Difference)
* Fraction
3) Weighted Average Shortcut Contuned
Mixtures - RAF Shortcut
1) Determine the range between the % of the individual mixtures or solutions
2) Get the absolute differences between the individual percentages and the percentage of the combined mixture
3) Express each difference as a fraction of the range
_ Bigger fraction: mixture whose % is closer to the % of the combined mixture
_Smaller fraction: refer to the individual mixture whose % is further from the % of the combined mixture
