4/9 lecture Flashcards
What is a photoreceptor?
molecule that absorbs lights and initiates some kind of signaling; usually a protein in biology
3 plant photoreceptors:
- phytochrome
- cryptochrome
- phototropin
What type of light does phytochrome perceive?
red and far-red light
what type of light does cryptochrome perceive?
blue light
what type of light does phototropin perceive?
blue light
what does phytochrome regulate?
germination and shade avoidance
what is photomorphogenesis?
growth or developmental change stimulated by light
2 forms of phytochrome?
-inactive form (Pr)
- active form (Pfr)
depends on light conditions
what is photoreversability?
ability of a photoreceptor to switch between active and non-active forms
Where does Pr exist in the plant cell?
cytoplasm
where does Pfr exist in the plant cell?
translocated to the nucleus
