4 Flashcards
What are enzymes and what makes them?
Enzymes are biological catalysts that are made by all living cells
What do enzymes do?
They speed up chemical reactions and are unchanged in the process
What type of molecules are enzymes?
They are protein molecules
What functions do proteins have?
Structural, enzymes, hormones, antibodies and receptors
What can enzymes be involved in?
Enzymes can be involved in degradation and synthesis reactions
What does the action of an enzyme result in?
Enzyme action results in a product(s)
What do enzymes relate to?
Enzymes should relate to their specific substrate(s) and product (s)
What do the sequence of amino acids make?
The variety of protein shapes and functions
How are proteins formed?
Proteins are formed from long chains of amino acids and it is the order of the bases on a DNA strand that determines the sequence of amino acids in a protein
What are two examples of enzymes?
Amylase and phosphorylase
