2 Flashcards
What is meant by the term concentration gradient?
The difference in concentration that exists between a region of high concentration and a region of low concentration
Define diffusion
The movement of molecules from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration
What is osmosis
Osmosis is the movement of water from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration through a selectively permeable membrane
What is a plasmolysed cell?
A plasmolysed cell is one where the cell membrane and contents have pulled away from the cell wall
What is a turgid cell?
A turgid cell is where the cell membrane and contents are pushed firmly against the cell wall
What happens to animal cells when they gain or lose to much water?
Animal cells burst if they gain too much water and shrink if they lose to much water
What is active transport?
Active transport is the movement of molecules and ions across a membrane, from a region of low concentration to a region of high concentration (i.e against the concentration gradient)
Cells that use active transport have what?
A larger number of mitochondria because active transport requires energy input to occur
