4/18- chapter 9 guided practice in articulation therapy Flashcards
In concept 1: traditional therapy– what are the eight steps?
- Begin with ear training (auditory discrimination) with high level of correct productions for advancement
- Teach phoneme in isolation with high level of correct productions for advancement
- teach phoneme in syllabic contexts to include CV, VC, VCV, and CVC configurations with high level of correct productions for advancement
- Teach the phoneme in initial, medial, and final positions of sound in words with high level of correct productions for advancement
- Teach phoneme in words in phrases (all positions of words) with high level of correct productions for advancement
- Teach phoneme in words in sentences (all positions of words) with high level of correct productions for advancement
- Teach phoneme in words in conversation (all positions of words) with high level of correct productions for advancement
- Teach phoneme in words in generalized communication contexts (all positions of words) with high level of correct productions established as criteria for completion or dismissal.
In concept 2- other approaches to therapy, what may we want to consider?
another approach if multiple articulation errors are present (i.e.: poor intelligibility, phonological processes)
What are some other approaches to arctic. therapy?
- Multiphonemic articulation approach
- Distinctive Features approach
- phonological processes approach
What are Dwight’s 8 concepts of articulation therapy?
- Traditional Therapy
- Other Approaches to Therapy
- Correct Productions
- Context of Groups
- Clients as Models
- Data Collection
- Data Collection Format
- Therapeutic materials
What is concept 3-correct productions?
establish a high percentage of correct productions of sounds during traditional articulation tx.
client should meet these criteria for two consecutive weeks before advancing to next level
100% @ the foundation level is critical to support progress in higher levels
(ie: isolation & syllable mastery provide opportunities for success at word level)
Describe concept 4-context of groups
work on skills within context of groups as often as possible
communication is interactive
Describe concept 5-clients as models
use clients within the group as models for each other
Describe concept 6-data collection
Collect data on each client, each session, and avoid “data mixing”
What is data mixing?
collecting data on more than one task (i.e.: don’t collect data on /t/ in the initial position and /t/ in the final position in the same set of data. UNLESS, that is what you are doing! :)
Describe concept 7-data collection format
use consistent format, use consistent method
Describe concept 8-therapeutic materials
beyond stimulus-response flash cards, toy models, or other therapeutic materials that add interest and variety to stimulations without detracting from the number of client response possibilities.
of productions matter
How can you break it down even more??
- fast to slow
- simple to complex (cognition/linguistically)
- focused to distracted (competing tasks)
- known environment to unknown
known listener to unknown
attentive listener to confused listener
