3rd Quarter Biodiversity Flashcards
Theory of use and disuse-
Organs not in use then it will disappear, while organs in use will develop.
Theory of Acquired Characteristics-
Believed to be inherited by their offspring and passed by the next generation.
Example of Lamarck’s Theory
Giraffe and their short necks:
From short neck to long neck by stretching to reach high leaves. Each generation stretched a little more and that longer neck was passed to their babies.
Snake and Limbs:
Older snakes had legs as they adapted to crawling, they used their limbs less. Over generations it disappeared.
Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection- .
Living organisms adapt and change
Darwin’s Finches-
Was able to see 13 varieties of finches, which varied in size and shape, from island to island.
5 Mechanism of Natural Selection
Overpopulation- Over reproduce
Competition- Compete for food and space
Variation- Two individuals are not the same
Adaptation- Better suited to the environment
Speciation- Favorable=increase & Unfavorable=disappear
Fossil Evidence-
Traces of organisms that lived in the past
