3D Design Chapter 5 Flashcards
space
the three-dimensional field with which the artist works, including both filled and unfilled areas
negative area
all unfilled space that is activated by the piece
positive area
the part of the work that physically occupies space
delineated space
an unfilled area described by filled areas of a three-dimensional work.
spatial presence
the size and impact of the field in which a three-dimensional work is experienced. This field may not stop at the physical boundaries of the work.
eye lines
the illusionary line between a figure’s eyes and something at which it appears to be looking.
gestalt
in a successful work of art, a whole that has properties that transcend the sum of its parts.
activated space
the area controlled by a three-dimensional piece, including not only its form but also perhaps a subtly energized but physically unfilled area in or around the work
participatory sculpture
three-dimensional art designed to engage the viewer physically
scale
the size of an object in relationship to other objects and to its surroundings.
monumental works
very large, imposing works of art that may or may not serve memorial purposes.
box sets
in set design, the illusion of a room with one wall cut away so that the audience can see in.
forced perspective
exaggeration of the illusionary convergence of parallel lines toward the horizon, used in set design to make a shallow space appear deeper.
linear perspective
the optical illusion that parallel lines converge toward a distant vanishing point.
aerial perspective
the optical illusion that areas closer to the viewer are sharper in detail, color intensity, and value contrast than areas farther away, sometimes used intentionally by artists to create illusions of spatial depth.
