What are the statistical differences in quality of life?
40% live in slum and squatter settlements
20% live in chawls
30% live in apartment buildings, high rise flats or bungalows
Why is there a lack of affordable housing?
Because property developers can make much more money by building expensive apartments for richer Mumbaikars
Why are there poor conditions for working?
As the government hasn’t imposed new regulations and laws and hasn’t made sure they’re obeyed
What would the city govt have to do to improve access to services?
Incentivise more companies to provide services in poorer areas of the city
What is the political / economic challenge for squatter settlements?
Some squatter settlements are close to city centre and valuable land
Property developers would pay lots for the land to be built upon and people o be moved elsewhere
But people want better quality of life in their area
What is the political / economic challenge for traffic congestion?
‘Super dense’ traffic congestion is politically very unpopular. But building new transport infrastructure is extremely expensive
What is the political / economic challenge for informal economy paying no taxes?
The govt gets no taxes from informal economy. It would be economically better if everyone worked in formal sector as govt gets money. But politically difficult because they feel they are losing money.
