Realistically, do paralympics represent to entire population of the disabled?
- It’s still very much a rich-country event – costly prostheses, specialist training, 9 countries provide 40% of athletes,
- so in reality, developing countries who lack funding for the paralympics are not participating as wealth taken away through corruption
Was media coverage of paralympics that good GLOBALLY?
Media coverage: Russia, Japan and USA didn’t really show the event
State what growth and improvements are occruing for other disadvantaged groups?
- Tourists demand wheel chair access in hotels /public transport encouraging broader provision for local people.
- Global media / Youtube has raised awareness of social attitudes / human rights so minority genders / sexualities/indigenous groups demand rights / chance to vote / education / equal job opportunities.
- Rural-urban migrants in developing countries are exposed to equality of opportunity for disadvantaged groups and challenge treatment of women/LGBT and other minorities in their home area.
- Global agenda of human rights is seen as more important – e.g. and women are now allowed to work outside the home.
What concerns have there been over globalisation (negative)
- conerns include perceived exploitiation of environments and people
- led to opposition by anit-globalisaion groups and enviro pressure groups
- they rejected globalised cultures and the practices of many TNCs in avoiding tax payments
Define cultural diffusion
Cultural Diffusion - The spread of cultural beliefs and social activities into different cultures.
Define cultural erosion
Cultural Erosion - The reduction of a culture due to globalisation.
Define transformalist
This is the belief that globalisation won’t lead to the formation of a
homogeneous culture. Instead, the flow of culture is two-way.
