Q

Why is rapid expansion of Mumbai a problem?

A

Rapid growth means that services and infrastructure can’t keep up. E.g. gov can’t supply water, electricity, enough schools, enough houses or healthcare for people.

Q

Why does raid growth lead to waste disposal problems?

A

The gov can’t supply waste disposal facilities, so businesses have to manage waste instead. This has caused problems in the Mithi River, as it has been polluted with 800 tonnes of waste

Q

What are the 3 main problems of living in slums, and why are they raised?

A

they arise because squatter settlements are unofficial, so the gov has no responsibility to supply water/electricity to them.

  1. water supply - standpipes instead of water pipes - available between 5:30 and 7:30 am
  2. sanitation/hygiene - rivers used as sewage systems and used to wash
