Mumbai is situated on the west coast of India

This is good for exports as it has a deep harbour housing 25% of India’s international trade

Connected via India’s golden quadrilateral and railway networks as well as through its harbour

What issues were there with the site of Mumbai?
- Jobs were ample so RUM led to a population spike in the late 20th century
- Became very overcrowded due to development only up its narrow peninsula
- This made Mumbai unhygienic and unsafe
- (1970) New Mumbai was made on the mainland as a suburb to house the overcrowded Mumbai.

- Developed along railway lines - allowed workers to commute to the city
- Industrial sectors have been developed along hthe harbour lines
Describe New Mumbai.
Low density suburb with low land prices with less congestion was the plan
Industries relocated in New Mumbai due to cheap lad and space for expansion
Describe the rural urban fringe.
Hard to locate due to large conurbation (extended urban area with many towns merging) with a population of 22 million.
- Rural areas are found in Mumbai where it is unsuitable to build land e.g. river estuaries and marshland in the east peninsula where it floods
