  • Became very overcrowded due to development only up its narrow peninsula
  • This made Mumbai unhygienic and unsafe
  • (1970) New Mumbai was made on the mainland as a suburb to house the overcrowded Mumbai.

Hard to locate due to large conurbation (extended urban area with many towns merging) with a population of 22 million.
- Rural areas are found in Mumbai where it is unsuitable to build land e.g. river estuaries and marshland in the east peninsula where it floods
