36 Flashcards
Why are medication administered intravenously
When patient cannot swallow them orally
Most rapid and efficient method of a ministration
Some medication or fluids are only available as IV
What are some of the substance that are given IV
Fluid and electrolytes
Medication that are efficient when given by this route or cannot be given any other way
Blood plasma or other blood component
Nutritional formulas containing glucose amino acid and lipids
How many milliliters does an average adult need in 24 hours to replace normal output
1500 to 2000 mL
Types of fluid
Isotonic hypertonic hypotonic
Same osmolality as blood
Isotonic
Normal Saline
D5 H2O =D5W
D5 0.225 saline
Lactated ringer’s
Isotonic
Example of isotonic solutions
Normal SaLINE
D5 H2O equals D5 W
D5 0.2 25 SALINe
Lactated ringer’s
Lower osmolarity than blood will cause fluid to be taken up by cell
Hypotonic
Example of hypotonic solution
0.45% SALINE water
Higher osmolarity than blood will cause the fluid to move out the cell into the blood
Hypertonic
Examples of hypertonic solution
D 10 H2O equals D 10 W
D5 NS
D5 0.45 SALINE
D5 LR
Enters the body directly through the IV site
Primary Iv
It’s connected to primary tubing instead of infusing directly into the patient
Piggyback or secondary set
Regular drop
10 through 20
Macro drops
10-15
Microdrops
60
When administering a secondary bag, should It be hung higher or lower than the primary bag
higher
What is the purpose of y tubing and what solution are administered using this type of tubing
Used to infuse blood products
Only normal SALINE use on the same line as blood
What must be obtained before administering blood to a patient
Hey signed consent must be obtained from patient to receive blood
No more than 48 to 72 hours before transfusion
You need to figure out the type and crossmatch
Two nurses must verify
Blood band
Vital signs
How quickly can a blood transfusion reaction occur
Within 5 to 15 minutes
What are the signs and symptoms of blood transfusion reaction
Hives itching facial flushing chills back pain fever stop infusion
What information must be verified with another nurse before administering any blood products
Two nurses must verify the blood component,
the patient number,
the component unit number,
ABO group
Rh factor,
expiration date,
check for CLOT
What size IV gauge with a patient need that will be receiving blood
At least 20 G; Smaller one may break up red blood cells
How much time would the nurse have to begin the administration of blood, after it leaves the blood bank
Must begin 30 minutes after the product leaves the blood bank
Blood must be infused within___ hours once released from the blood bank
4
How often are the patient’s vital signs assessed after initiating the blood transfusion
At the 15 minute mark; then the 30 minute mark; and every 30 minutes there after
