36 Flashcards
Why are medication administered intravenously
When patient cannot swallow them orally
Most rapid and efficient method of a ministration
Some medication or fluids are only available as IV
What are some of the substance that are given IV
Fluid and electrolytes
Medication that are efficient when given by this route or cannot be given any other way
Blood plasma or other blood component
Nutritional formulas containing glucose amino acid and lipids
How many milliliters does an average adult need in 24 hours to replace normal output
1500 to 2000 mL
Types of fluid
Isotonic hypertonic hypotonic
Same osmolality as blood
Isotonic
Normal Saline
D5 H2O =D5W
D5 0.225 saline
Lactated ringer’s
Isotonic
Example of isotonic solutions
Normal SaLINE
D5 H2O equals D5 W
D5 0.2 25 SALINe
Lactated ringer’s
Lower osmolarity than blood will cause fluid to be taken up by cell
Hypotonic
Example of hypotonic solution
0.45% SALINE water
Higher osmolarity than blood will cause the fluid to move out the cell into the blood
Hypertonic
Examples of hypertonic solution
D 10 H2O equals D 10 W
D5 NS
D5 0.45 SALINE
D5 LR
Enters the body directly through the IV site
Primary Iv
It’s connected to primary tubing instead of infusing directly into the patient
Piggyback or secondary set
Regular drop
10 through 20
Macro drops
10-15
