3.5 symbiosis Flashcards
Define symbiosis
Any interaction between 2 different species
What are the 2 types of symbiotes
- parasitism
- mutualism
Define parasitism
-where one organism (the parasite) benefits from the relationship by obtaining energy and/or nutrients from the other organism (the host) which is harmed or loses energy and/or materials/nutrients
Give an example of parasitism
Tick feeding on a dear’s blood
- tick benefits taking nutrients from deers blood
- deer is harmed from disease or loss of nutrients
State the three type of transmission of parasites
- direct contact
- release of resistant stages
- use of vector
Define direct contact
-where a parasite is passed on from physical contact
Eg head lice
Define release of resistant stages
-when th parasite is able to survive adverse conditions until it comes into contact with a new host
Eg ticks
Define use of a vector
-where an organism can carry a disease from human to human
Eg mosquitos carrying plasmodium causing malaria
What are the 2 types of parasitic life cycle
- direct life cycle
- indirect life cycle
Define direct life cycle
-where eggs are shed and passed onto a new member of the host species
Define indirect life cycles
-primary host species is the site for sexual reproduction and throughout the life cycle the parasite becomes adapted to employ a secondary host species which allows these immature parasites to complete their life cycle
Define mutualism
- this is where both organisms benefit from the interdependent relationship (one can’t survive without the other)
- one organism provides a service and the other receives a resource
- both organisms provide a service
