35 - Structure and Function of Eccrine, Apocrine and Sebaceous Glands Flashcards
Sweat glands
Differences between Eccrine and Apocrine ducts
Eccrine- EVERYWHERE. but most abundant on palm, soles. functioning soon after birth.
Apocrine- Armpits and Anogenital, start fuctioning at puberty. ducts empty into hair follicles.
What type of fibers innervate eccrine glands, and what is the principal neurotransmitter involved in their activation?
Innervation of eccrine glands consists of postganglionic sympathetic fibers that have acetylcholine as the principal neurotransmitter
What are the primary locations and developmental dependency of apocrine sweat glands in humans, and what remains unclear about their function?
Apocrine sweat glands are androgen-dependent for their development and have an unclear function in humans;
primary locations are the axillae, anogenital region, periumbilical region and nipples
