What are the types of GI polyps?
Inflammatory pseudopolyps
Hyperplastic polyps
Hamartomatous
Neoplastic
What causes inflammatory pseudopolyps?
Regenerating islands of mucosa in UC
What causes hyperplastic polyps?
Piling up of goblet cells and absorptive cells
Describe the architecture of hyperplastic polyps
Serrated surface architecture
Do hyperplastic polyps have any malignant potential?
No
What are hamartomatous polyps?
Tumour-like growths composed of tissues present at site where they develop
What causes hamartomatous polyps?
They may be sporadic, or part of familial syndromes
What are neoplastic polyps?
Tubular or villous adenomas
What symptoms might neoplastic polyps cause?
Are usually asymptomatic, but may cause blood/mucus on PR or tenesmus
What is juvenile polyposis?
An autosomal dominant condition whereby patients have >10 hamartomatous polyps
What is the importance of juveline polyposis?
There is an increased CRC risk, and so need surveillance and polypectomy
What is Cowden syndrome?
An autosomal dominant syndrome with macrocephaly, skin stigmata, and intestinal hamartomas
What does Cowden syndrome increase the risk of?
Extra-intestinal cancer
