3.4.4 Genetic diversity and adaptation Flashcards
1
Q
What is genetic diversity and what it lead to?
A
the number of different alleles of genes in a population
a factor enabling natural selection
2
Q
Natural selection
A
- variation in a population due to random mutation in genes producing new alleles
- selection pressure due to competition with source like food , mate, water
- advantageous alleles will pass on as they survive (survive of the fittest)
- survival species reproduce and pass on advantage alleles so the frequency of the advantageous alleles increased in the population
- so the species is better adapted to the environment
3
Q
two type of variation and their graph and example
A
continuous
normal distribution
height/ weight/ finger length
controlled by a lot of gene and environment
discountinuous
bar graph
tougues rolling/ finger print/ eye color
controlled by a few genes
4
Q
3 types of selection with example and description
A
Directional (extreme) - antibiotic resistant
Stablizing (moderate- keep average the same) - baby size
disruptive (both extreme) - color of oyster shell black and white not grey, help survive in and deep or shallow area- hide)
