#34 inland aquatic systems Flashcards
what is lotic water
running water
what is lentic water
standing water
is freshwater saline
freshwater is generally low in salinity however can become more saline if there is no input and lots of Evaporation
how many types of algae are in freshwater?
13 types can be micro or macro
over 1300 species
what are the most common algae in freshwater?
filamentous greens
are freshwater algae endemic
yes
what are primary producers in the freshwater
diatoms and dinoflagelates are in freshwater as primary producers
what types of algae are in freshwater
green algae (chlorophyta): green seaweed - majority are freshwater. tend to be in colonies. single cells. includes stone warts - they colonise before flowering plants and stabilise sediments blue greens - cyanobacteria: single cells, primary producers, fix nitrogen
what are higher plants in freshwater environments
- monocots or dicots - similar to seagrasses
can be temperate or tropical
provide nutrients from sediment and water
includes seagrasses - paddleweeds
what primary consumers live in freshwater
zooplankton - abundant in lotic flowing waters
eat diatoms
what dominates in freshwater
macro-ivertebrates: insects
dominate in species number, biomass and productivity
they eat the zooplankton
what are some vertebrate species in freshwater
frogs - around 200 species
fish including Murray cod and lungfish
what are the threats to inland aquatic flora and fauna
habitat loss
salinity - increases in salinity
harvesting of fish and flora
pest species: rock snot, carp fish, noxious weeds
