Q

why are australias marine seaweeds diverse?

A

continental drift and the seperation of australia from antartica
the ocean currents we have surrounding us - warm water and cool water - creates diversity

Q

what are microalgae and why are they special

A

micro-algae are phytoplankton: diatoms and dinoflagellates

  • they are the BASIS of marine food webs
  • they are high in nutrient levels
  • attached micro-algae are important colonisers to the seabed or a structure
  • xooxanthelleae are also needed for corals to live
