3.4 Animal Welfare Flashcards
Behavioural Indicators
Stereotypy
Behaviour pattern that takes the form of a repetitive movement lacking variation.
Stereotypy seems to lack purpose but allows an animal to show frustration. This behaviour can be overcome by enriching the environment to make it similar to the animal’s natural habitat.
e.g pacing
Behavioural Indicators
Misdirected Behaviour
Normal pattern of behaviour is directed inappropriately towards the animal itself, another animal or its surroundings.
Enriching the environment to include companions and a more stimulating enclosure reduces misdirected behaviour.
Behavioural Indicators
Failures in Sexual and Parental Behaviour
Poor welfare and prolonged isolation can cause poor reproductive success and poor parental investment as the animal may not have developed the correct behaviours when young.
This can be improved through allowing the animal to spend time with those of its own species to learn normal behaviours.
Behavioural Indicators
Altered Levels of Activity
Displaying high levels activity (hysteria) or low levels of activity (apathy)
This can be overcome by providing animals with natural stimulation, social interaction and more space.
Intensive Farming
Intensive farming is less ethical than free range farming due to poorer animal welfare.
However, in order to create a free-range farm, more land is required and more work is needed to keep the animals.
Advantages of Intensive Farming
Products can be sold at a higher price, and animals have a better quality life.
Costs of Animal Welfare
- High initial set up cost of suitable environment
- High cost of more nutritious food
Benefits of Animal Welfare
- Less stressed animals
- More successful breeding
- Higher quality products
