3.3.9 - Carboxylic acids and derivates Flashcards
Why is the carboyxlic acid dissociaton equation reversible?
Because it is a weak acid
What do carboxylic acids form when reacting with carbonates? (3)
- Salt (COONa)
- CO2
- Water
Give the catalyst used
How do you form a ester?
Carboxylic acid + alcohol = ester + water
Uses acid catalyst
What is another way an ester can be made, and what does it form?
Acid anhydride + alcohol —-> Ester + carboxylic acid
How do you name an ester?
- Name the part that came from the alcohol by replacing ‘ol’ with ‘yl’ (propan-2-yl)
- Name the other part using -oate prefix
A full name example is methyl ethanoate
What are the two products for acidic hydrolysis of an ester?
Carboxylic acid and alcohol
What are the two products for alkali hydrolysis of an ester?
Carboxylate salt and alcohol
Why do fats have higher melting points than oils?
- Saturated hydrocarbon chains
- Allows for neat packing together
- Increasing VDW forces between them
What is the general strucuture of fats/oils?
Glycerol + long chain carboxylic acid
What is the equation for the hydrolysis of fats and oils?
Fat/oil + NaOH —> Glycerol + Sodium salt (COONa)
Name the products
How do you obtain the fatty acid chain from the sodium salt?
React with acid to form fatty acid and Na+ ion
How do you form biodiesel?
Fat/oil + methanol —> Glycerol + methyl ester (biodiesel)
What is the catalyst used in the production of biodiesel?
KOH
What do acyl chlorides form when reacting with water?
Carboxylic acid and HCl
What do acyl chlorides form when reacting with an alcohol?
Ester + HCl
