3.3.1 introduction to organic chemistry Flashcards
What is displayed formula?
shows every bond and shows what atoms are attached in a compound
What is structural formula?
How atoms are arranged in a molecule and shows which functional groups are present. only shows double bonds
What is skeletal formula?
shows the carbon chain. only shows elements that are not carbon or hydrogen.
What is molecular formula?
Shows all atoms in a molecule
What is Empirical formula?
Simplest ratio of atoms
Define homologous series
A set of organic compounds with the same functional group and similar chemical properties but different carbon chain length.
What is a functional group?
An atom or group of atoms which are responsible for the characteristic reactions of that molecule.
Functional group for haloalkanes and suffix.
c-any element
suffix = none
Functional group for alcohol and suffix.
C - OH
suffix = ol
Functional group for aldehydes and suffix.
C - C= O -H
Suffix = al
Functional group for Ketones and suffix.
C = O - C
Suffix = one
List the priority of functional groups with the highest priority to lowest.
Carboxylic acid
ester
aldehyde
Ketone
alcohol
alkenes
halogenoalkanes
alkanes
Give the formula for alkanes
Cn H2n+2
Give the 3 rules for naming branched alkanes.
- State position of branch (lowest number possible)
- more than one branch name alphabetically.
- branch can not exist at the end of a chain
Give the formula for alkenes
Cn H2n
What is the difference between ketones and aldehydes
Aldehydes C=O is at end of chain
Define structural isomerism.
Molecules with the same molecular formula but different structural formula.
Define chain isomerism.
A straight chain or branched chain with the same molecular formula.
Define positional isomerism.
Same molecular formula and functional group but the functional group is attached to the main chain at different positions.
Define functional group isomerism.
same molecular formula but different functional group
What are stereoisomers?
Compounds with the same structural formula but different arrangements in space.
