3.3 memory Flashcards
Describe the term ‘selective memory’
The receptors in our sense organs are continually picking up stimuli and transmitting sensory impulses to the brain so that only a fraction of sensory images become committed to memory
Describe encoding
sensory image must be converted into a form that the brain can process and store.
describe storage
retaining the information over a period of time.
describe retaining
the ability to recall or recognise what has been learned or
experienced.
describe retrieval
recovery of the stored material from either the short-term or long-term memory.
what happens to info as it enters the brain
it passes through sensory memory and if selected will enter STM. From there it is either discarded or transferred to LTM
what is the serial disposition effect?
when a number of items such as a list of words is remembered, those which arrive first and those which arrive last are remembered best than those in between due to displacement and decay.
Describe two ways to enhance STM
rehearsal - repeatedly going over the items presented, extending the timespan of the info retention until the y become stored in LTM.
chunking - grouping the items in a meaningful way
