3.2 the cerebral cortex Flashcards
name the layers of the brain
The central core (medulla and cerebellum)
The limbic system
The cerebral cortex (outer layer)
what is the cerebral cortex
This is the centre of conscious thought (intelligence, imagination etc) It recalls behaviour in light of experience.
Name and describe what is contained in the cerebral cortex?
Sensory areas - receive impulses from the body’s receptors and send them to association areas
association areas - analyse and interpret impulses and ‘take decisions’ if necessary (language, processing etc)
Motor areas - receive info from association areas and send impulses to effectors to bring about a response.

what is the corpus callosum
Connect the two hemisphere by a large bundle of nerve fibres called the corpus callosum which allows information to be transferred between them.
