3.3 Meisis Flashcards
Describe the division of meisis
Reduction divioon of a diploid cell to haploid
Meiosis is..
making gametes in the reproductive organs
Reasons behind meiosis
Most sexual reproducing animals are diploid
To reproduce, these organisms need haploid gametes
2 haploid cells form diploid zygote
The 2 divisions of meiosis
1) separation of homologous pairs
2) separation of sister chromatids
Homologous chromosomes
Same size, banding pattern, same centromere position
Same genes on the same loci (same genes, maybe dif alleles)
Non- disjunction
Failure of chromosomes to separate
Leads to Down Syndrome
Karyotyping
Arranging chromosomes pairs according to structure
Karyotyping involves
Harvesting cells (from fetus or white blood cells)
Chemically inducing cell division during mitosis when chromosomes condense
Staining photograph chromosomes before arranging then
Reasons for pre natal karyotyping
Determing babies gender
Test for chromosomal abnormalities
How are cells for karyotyping collected
Aminocentesis
Chorionic Villus Sampling
Aminocentesis
Inseting needle throught abdominal wall knto the amniotic cavity in uterus. Amniotic fluid with fetal cells is taken
Chorionic Villus Sampling
Tube inserted into cervix. Tiny sample of chorionic villi (with fetal cells) is taken from placenta
What is the abnormality that causes Down Syndrome
3 chromosomes on the 21st position
