3.3 Ionic Bondig Flashcards
Define ionic bonding?
Attraction between oppositely charged ions
Give all aspects of Ionic bonding?
held by a strong electrostatic force of attraction
High melting/boiling points
Don’t conduct electricity when a solid
Held together in a lattice pattern
What’s the difference between an ion and an atom?
Atoms are uncharged
Ions are charged
What’s the difference between Oxidisation and reduction?
Oxidisation = loss of electrons
Reduction = gain of electrons
Between which 2 elements will and ionic bond form?
Metal and Non-metal
Write the formula for Calcium Oxide?
CaO
Write the formula for Sodium Iodide?
NaI
Which will conduct electricity and heat better a solid ionic compound or a molten/dissolved ionic compound? (Explain)
Solid –> Won’t as ions are stuck in place aren’t free to move
Molten/Dissolved –> Will as ions are free to move
