3.1 Intro to Chem Flashcards
Define a Chemical Change?
An irreversible Change
Define a Physical Change?
Reversible Change
Define an element?
Only one type of atom
Define a compound?
2 or more elements chemically combined
Define a mixture?
Different elements combined
How can you test for pure water?
Boil the water, pure water boils at 100 degrees
How can you test for the presence of water?
Use hydrate copper sulphate
If water is present then there’s a colour change of white to blue
Define Solvent?
The liquid the solute can dissolve in
Define Soluble?
A substance which can be dissolved
Define Saturated?
A solution which no more solute can be dissolved into
Define Solute?
The substance to be dissolved into the solution
Define Solution
Transparent mixture of a solvent with a solute dissolved in it
Define Insoluble?
A substance which can’t dissolve
Define Suspension?
Solid present in a solution becuz it didn’t dissolve
Name the first step in the solubility practical?
Place a 100cm cubed beaker on a balance, making sure it reads 0
Name the second step in the solubility practical?
Add 20g of water to the beaker
Name the third step in the solubility practical?
Weigh 20g of copper sulphate crystals then add to water
Name the fourth step in the solubility practical?
Stir mixture with thermometer for 2 mins
Name the fifth step in the solubility practical?
Set up a filter funnel over a conical flask
Name the sixth step in the solubility practical?
While stirring heat mixture via a Bunsen burner
Name the seventh step in the solubility practical?
Once reached set temperature pour into filter
Name the eighth step in the solubility practical?
Weigh the conical flask and filtrate on balance
Name the ninth step in the solubility practical?
Pour the filtrate away and reweigh the empty conical flask.
