Q

Examples of user input devices…

A
  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • Touchscreen
  • Microphone

(they are in order of how recently they have been used to actually control a computer, keyboard being used for command prompts, then a mouse used as user interfaces have been implemented as computers became more of a main stream thing that everyone was expected to have, a touch screen is a user interface as computer technology has become smaller and wireless (cellular & wifi internet connection as well as being battery powered) . Even more recently is the implementation of the microphone being used for voice recognition

Q

What is a 2D scanner and how does it work?

A
  • Shines light onto a document
  • The reflection is captured in a lens (black and white or colour)
  • The image is converted into a digital format
  • An OCR (optical character regonition) could be used to turn printed characters on the image back into digital, editable text.
  • An OMR (optical mark recognition) could be used if the document scanned was, for example, a multiple choice exam

Q

What is a 3D scanner and how does it work?

A
  • Produces a 3D model
  • Uses a laser or x-rays
  • It could be used to 3D print an object that was scanned to replace a broken part of something
  • Can be used in airports/anywhere for security

Q

What is Bar Code and how does it work?

A
  • It means cashiers don’t have to manually enter the price of every item at the till
  • It was developed in the 1970’s
  • Bar codes are pre encoded into the till systems database
  • The reader translates each bar of the code into a number
  • The reader has an illuminator and a scanner, the scanner detects where light is being reflected back from the bar code as an analogue signal which it converts to digital signal
  • The digital signal is decoded by a decoder and sent to the computer
  • This information is matched with the product details
  • This means the price of an item can be changed while the barcode is kept the same
  • As well as the price, the stock of an items will also be stored on the computer’s database of products

Q

What is a QR code and how does it work?

A
  • Quick Response code
  • It has 4 larger squares in each corner, one smaller than the rest, giving all the squares scale and allowing the computer to easily orientate the image of the code the angle and side from which the QR code is scanned is irrelevant, giving ease of use to the user
  • Information is stored both vertically and horizontally
  • It requires a computer with a camera eg Smartphone
  • It can store up to 7,000 digits

Q

Advantages and disadvantages of a QR code/scanner

A

Ad

  • No specialised hardware required (we call carry a smart phone)
  • 7,000 digits can be stored
  • Can have data stored online and the QR holds the URL effectively giving it unlimited storage

Q

How does a digital camera work?

A
  • The camera has a CCD (Charge Coupled Device) that senses in analogue the lights being shone into it (reflected off objects, the same way we see)
  • The CCD then digitalises the image and it can be displayed on the LCD instantly
  • The higher the number of pixels the CCD can capture, the higher the resolution of the digital image
  • The pixels (seen when zooming in) are called the ‘picture elements’

Q

Advantages and disadvantages of a digital camera…

A

Ad
-Instant picture viewing
-Easy to back up and/or dave images to another device
-The digital images can be shared electronically (over the internet verses mailing)
-Images can be easily edited as a digital file
Dis
-If you take high quality pictures you will run out of storage more quickly

Q

How does a touch screen work?

A
  • It is a combination of an LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) with a touch sensitive layer
  • The touch sensor will recognise fingers or a stylus
  • A user can type on a touch screen with a virtual keyboard
  • The interface and buttons on the screen can be changed depending on what application is being used
  • Good for smaller, portable, non desktop devices where a traditional keyboard and mouse would be useless in most situations
  • Modern devices such as smart phones and tablets reply on this technology
17
Q

What is the difference between a Capacitive touch screen and a Resistive touch screen?

A

Capacitive:
-Uses the natural electronic current of our bodies to detect your fingers
-Doesn’t work whilst wearing a glove
Resistive:
-Multiple layers with space between them, it senses pressure

18
Q

Advantages and Disadvantages of a touch screen?

A
Ad:
-Simple to use
-To change the input options (buttons, kets etc) there is no need to change hardware
-It allows the input method to become application specific
-Saves space
-Versatile
Dis:
-Can be inaccurate
-Slight damage can render it useless
19
Q

How does an interactive whiteboard work?

A
  • Similar to a touch screen
  • The board its self is the input device
  • The projector is the display/output device and it put the image on the touch sensitive board
  • Sensors determine where the board has been touched
  • Same ease of use as a white board with desktop interface
20
Q

Advantages and disadvantages of an interactive whiteboard…

A
Ad:
-Versatile
-Larger display for desktop computer
-therefore good for classroom use
Dis:
-Must be accurately calibrated
-Requires physical installation
21
Q

How does a microphone work?

A
  • Converts analogue sound signals to digital
  • ADC (Analogue-to-Digital Converter)
  • Once a digital sound file is made it can be digitally replayed, editted
