Cognition
Thinking; mental activity that goes on in the brain when a person is processing information.
Concept
Grouping of like information formed by experience; an idea that represents a category of objects, events, activities.
Prototype
A concept that closely matches the defining characteristics of the concept. (Prime example)
Concept hiearachy
Organizes concept from broad to narrow
Artificial concept
Concepts defined by rules, such as word definitions and mathematical formulas
Natural concept
A concept acquired not from a definition but through everyday perceptions and experiences; also known as a fuzzy concept
Algorithm
Specific step-by-step procedures for solving certain types of problems.
Heurisitc
“mental shortcut”; a simple rule intended to be applied to many situations.
Insight
“Aha!” moments when solution seem to appear in a flash.
