3.3 Electrical Terminology Flashcards
The symbol for Coulombs is?
C
The symbol for charge is?
Q
What is the formula for Coulombs
1C = 6.25 x 10 to the power 18 Electrons
What does Q=3C Mean?
3 Coulombs
1 C/s is how many Amps?
1 C/s = 1 A
Voltage is a measure of what?
The force of pressure that is applied to electrons to remove them from their orbits and propel along a wire.
What is Electromotive force or EMF
Volts
The current in a circuit is proportional to?
The voltage driving it through the circuit
E is the symbol for?
EMF
V is the symbol for?
Volts
What is the unit of quantities for electric charge?
The Coulomb
If One C per second is equal to 1 amp, if 10 coulombs go around a circuit in 1 second how many amps (current) is there?
10
With electron theory current flows from?
The most negative point to the most positive point.
Voltage is the measure?
of the force or pressure applied to electrons to remove them from their orbit and propel them along a wire. AKA Electro motive force
Current is proportional to?
The voltage driving it through the circuit, doubling the voltage doubles the current, halving the voltage halves the current.
What is the symbol for Volts?
V
What is the symbol for EMF?
E
What does E = 3V mean?
Electromotive force of 3 volts
What is the unit of current and how is it defined?
Ampere , current is directly proportional to the voltage driving it around the circuit. twice the voltage = twice the amps. half voltage = half amps
What is the unit of force that moves current around the circuit?
The unit of force that Moves the current around the circuit is EMF or Volts
What is potential difference?
The measurement of volts between 2 different bodies.
How would you measure the PD of a battery?
By measuring the voltage between the positive and negative terminal bodies
How can you measure the EMF (V) of a battery?
With a voltmeter or multimeter
What is the unit of opposition to current flow and how is it defined?
Ohm (resistance) , current is inversely proportional to the current in a circuit. Doubling Resistance = Halving Current, Halving resistance = doubling current.
What factors effect the resistance of a conductor?
- The length of the wire (proportional) - Longer = more resistance 10m length of wire has double the resistance of a 5 m wire.
- cross sectional area of the conductor/wire (inversely proportional) - wider = less resistance.
- Material it is made of
- the Temperature of the conductor/wire
What happens to the resistance of a conductor/wire if the temperature rises?
resistance rises, if its cold resistance is low.
What is OHMS law
V = IR
Explain Conductance
It is the opposite (Reciprocal) of resistance, it is the ability of a material to CONDUCT current.
What is the unit of conductance? and its symbol
Siemens, Symbol = S
What is the symbol for conductance?
G, EG: G = 3s means a conductance of 3 siemens
