DSM5 diagnostic criteria adjustment disorder
emotional/behavioral symptoms in response to stressor occurring within 3 MONTHS of the onset of stressor
not normal bereavement/ not a different diagnosis
does not last more than 6 mo after end of stressor or its consequences
elevated risk of suicide
common diagnosis (5-20% outpatient)
most helpful tx
supportive counseling
may also give medication to address symptoms interfering with functioning

encourage pt to acknowledge both the good and bad aspects
benefits of exercise
stress management - more effective than sedentary activities like reading or watching tv
