3.3 Flashcards
Vegetative propagation
Taking a cutting of a plant and allowing it to root and produce another plant
Grafting
The act of attaching the roots of one plant to the shoots of another similar but more desirable species
Produces trees that all near the same type of apple
Reproductive cloning
Involves the transfer of a nucleus from a donor body cell into an egg cell that has no nucleus
Gene cloning
The transfer of a gene into bacteria so that the gene can be reproduced multiple times
Therapeutic cloning
Similar to reproductive cloning but the purpose is to harvest embryonic stem cells from a developing embryo
Xenotransplantation
The process of transplanting animal organs into humans
Artificial insemination
Collecting sperm from a male and placing it in the reproductive system of a female
In vitro fertilization
Sperm and eggs are collected and placed in a test tube or Petri dish do that fertilization occurs
Gene therapy
Therapy in which healthy genes are inserted into cells so that cells function normally
Cloning
Creation of a genetically identical organism that is an exact copy of a gene cell tissue or organism
Transgenic organism
Organism that contains genes from other species
