Q

Why is urbanisation occurring rapidly in some areas?

A

Rural areas in emerging and developing countries have lower qualities of life than urbanising areas with more infrastructure and so people are attracted to move to cities. These cities offer many pull factors such as higher paying jobs in higher quantities.

Q

What is suburbanisation and why is it happening?

A

Suburbanisation is the movement of people from the city to the suburbs. This can occur for many reasons, commonly because of over population and pollution, causing people to dislike the busy and crowded life style that it offers and the suburbs is normally a more suitable environment to raise a family.

Q

Why did counter-urbanisation happen?

A

Counter urbanisation is when people moved from urban areas to suburban areas. This mainly happened because of de-industrialisation in the inner city as businesses moved out of the city and the people moved with it.

Q

What is re-urbanisation and why does it happen?

A

Re-urbanisation is when old factories and brownfield sites are transformed into living spaces and business districts. This happens because of regulation restricting outward development and so inward development of sites that are an eye sore or serve no function benefits the community.

Q

Who moves back in re-urbanisation?

A

In areas that have been re-urbanised, young, single people who want to live close to their work move into the area. They also move in because of the high quality flats, upgraded infrastructure and good entertainment services that are available.

Q

Where in the city do you find commerce, industry and residential?

A

In the CBD, you find land being used for commercial purposes and public buildings. Older industry can be found in the inner city but alongside with residential areas (terraced housing). The suburbs are highly residential as well as the rural-urban fringe (which also has commercial land use as well).

Q

How does accessibility affect land use?

A

Commercial land needs to be highly accessible to residential areas for it to be profitable, therefore before you create either residential or commercial areas you must make sure they complement each other in a way that they can both profit.

Q

How does cost affect land use?

A

The cost of land affects what can be built there. For example, areas with high land cost would not be suitable for residential areas because it would mean people would pay a much higher rent and it would be harder for them to make a life for themselves there.
