3.2.2 mitosis Flashcards
what are the 3 parts of the cell cycle in eukaryotes
interphase mitosis and cytokinesis
describe the three stages of interphase
G1- growth and signal for cell division
S-synthesis (DNA)
G2-further growth and error checking
what is mitosis
nuclear division to produce two identical daughter cells that are genetically identical to parent cells
why is mitosis important
growth, repair and reproduction (asexual)
what are the four stages of mitosis
-prophase
-metaphase
-anaphase
-telophase
describe prophase
chromosomes condense and become shorter and fatter. spindle fibres are formed at opposite poles
describe metaphase
chromosomes line along the middle of spindle fibres attached by the centromere
describe anaphase
centromere that holds chromosomes together pulls two sister chromatids apart to opposite poles
describe telophase
chromatids decondense, nuclear envelope reforms and spindle fibres break down
describe cytokinesis
cytoplasm splits to produce two daughter cells
