3.2 Study Guide Flashcards
What is the difference between autotrophs and heterotrophs?
Autotrophs make their own food and heterotrophs get their food from other organisms
What is the difference between herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, and detrivores?
Herbivores eat only plants, carnivores eat only living organisms, omnivores eat plants and living organisms, and detrivores eat dead organisms
What is shown in each pyramid?
The pyramid of energy shows how much energy is transferred, the pyramid of numbers shows the amount of each organism per level, and the pyramid of biomass shows the amount of biomass per level
What is the rule of 10?
The rule of 10 is that if the amount of energy transferred between levels is unknown, then it is assumed to be 10%
Why is it more efficient to eat at a lower trophic level than a higher trophic level?
At a lower trophic level, you are closer to the source of energy, so there is more energy available to consume
