2.3 Study Guide Flashcards
What are the characteristics of K-selected populations?
K-selected populations have high parental care when young and most die at an old age. They do not have a large amount of offspring.
What are the characteristics of r-selected populations?
R-selected populations have little to no parental care and a high youth mortality rate. There are usually a lot of offspring produced at one time.
What is the basic structure of a survivorship curve?
The x axis is usually time and the y-axis is the percentage alive. The graph is logarithmic.
How do you identify what type a survivorship curve is?
Type 1 curves have a curve at the end of the graph, type 2 curves have a constant death rate, and type 3 graphs have an early curve downwards.
What survivorship curve would fit a species that dies at a constant rate?
Type 2 because the slope of the line is constant and thus straight at a certain angle.
