3.2 Flashcards
What is the brain?
The complex central processing centre of the nervous system
What functions does the brain have?
The brain has many different functions
What does the cerebral cortex do?
The cerebral cortex takes in sensory information from eyes, ears etc.
It coordinates voluntary movements and makes decisions based on memories it has, or previous experience. It is the centre of conscious thoughts
What are the three key areas of the cerebral cortex?
Sensory area, Motor area, Association areas
Language processing, Imagination, Personality, Intelligence
What are the four lobes of the cerebral cortex?
Frontal lobe, Parietal lobe, Temporal lobe, Occipital lobe
What regions are included in the motor and sensory regions of the cerebral cortex?
Brainstem
The Brain - Corpus Callosum
The cerebral cortex is split into 2 hemisphere
Information from one side of the body is processed in the cerebral cortex on the opposite side of the brain e.g. right brain controls left side of body
The corpus callosum is a bridge of deep tissue that connects the two sides of the brain. Information can be passed through it.
