3.2 Flashcards
What elements make up amino acids?
carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen
What elements make up lipids?
carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms
What elements make up nucleotides?
carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorous, and hydrogen
What elements make up carbohydrates?
carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen
What do amino acids make up?
Amino acids are the monomers that make up proteins.
What do carbohydrates make up?
Aldehydes, which are double-bonded carbon and oxygen atoms, plus a hydrogen atom, and ketones, which are double-bonded carbon and oxygen atoms, plus two additional carbon atoms
What do lipids make up?
a glycerol backbone, 2 fatty acid tails (hydrophobic), and a phosphate group (hydrophilic)
What do nucleotides make up?
a sugar molecule (either ribose in RNA or deoxyribose in DNA) attached to a phosphate group and a nitrogen-containing base
