3.16 Filters Flashcards
What is a filter / filter circuit?
A circuit design to block out certain sound frequencies (used in a radio station)
What are the three uses for a filter?
-allow certain frequencies to pass
-block certain frequencies from passing
- completely blocking direct current electrical energy
What are the four different groups of filters?
-low-pass filters
-high-pass filters
-band-pass filters
-band-stop filters
The series connection of a high-pass filter and a low-pass filter is called?
Band-pass filter
The parallel connection of a high-pass filter and a low-pass filter is called?
A band-stop filter
What are filters made from?
A combination of using capacitors and inductors
What type of frequency is allowed to pass in a low-pass filter?
Low frequencies
Low-pass filters can sometimes be called?
‘High-cut filters’ or ‘treble-cut filters’
What are the two basic kinds of circuits capable of achieving a low-pass filter?
-inductive low-pass filter
-capacitive low-pass filter
What frequency does a high-pass filter let pass?
High frequencies
What are high—pass filters sometimes called?
‘Low-cut filter’ or ‘bass-cut filter’
What frequency does a band-pass filter let through?
A particular band (channel). They cut off the upper and lower frequencies
When is a band-pass filter used?
Where a particular band or spread of frequencies need to be filtered from a range of signals
What frequencies does a band-stop filter let through?
All off them apart from a particular band (channel)
A band-stop filter is the opposite of a?
Band-pass filter
What is meant by the quality of the sound circuit?
The oscillating energy to the lost energy in the circuit
What components affect the quality of a sound circuit?
-resistor
-inductor
-capacitor
Why is there always a tolerance on which frequencies will be passed or stopped?
Because the components in the circuit cannot be manufactured to exact values
What is meant by bandwidth?
The range in which the frequencies are not blocked or can pass
What is a stop band bandwidth?
The range of frequencies that are blocked
What is a pass band bandwidth?
A range of frequencies that will be able to pass
At what point is bandwidth measured from?
Where the amplitude current is 70.7% of its peak
