3.1.6 ATP Flashcards
1
Q
What is ATP made of
A
- ribose sugar
- adenine
- 3 phosphate groups
2
Q
Describe the formation of ATP
A
- ADP + phosphate —> ATP
- catalysed by ATP synthase
- respiration and photosynthesis
3
Q
Describe the hydrolysis of ATP
A
- ATP —> ADP + Pi
- catalysed by ATP hydrolase
- reaction coupled to energy requiring reactions
. Often by phosphorylating substrates to make them more reactive
4
Q
Why is the feature ‘releases a small but sufficient amount of energy’ beneficial for ATP
A
- enough energy to drive important metabolic reactions while keeping energy wastage low
5
Q
Why is the feature ‘exists as a stable molecule’ beneficial for ATP
A
- doesn’t break down unless a catalyst (ATPase) is present so energy won’t be wastes
6
Q
Why is the feature ‘can be recycled’ beneficial for ATP
A
- breakdown of ATP is reversible, can be reformed from ADP and Pi.
- means the same molecule can be reused elsewhere in the cell for diff. Reactions
7
Q
Why is the feature ‘hydrolysis is quick & easy’ beneficial for ATP
A
- allows cells to respond to a sudden increase in energy demand
8
Q
Why is ATP being soluble and move easily between cells a benefit
A
- transport energy to different areas of the cell
9
Q
Why is the feature ‘forms phosphorylated intermediates’ beneficial to ATP
A
- makes metabolites more reactive & lower the activation energy required for a reaction
