3.1.5.2 DNA replication Flashcards
1
Q
How is DNA replicated
A
- semi-conservatively
2
Q
What does each double helix consist of
A
- one original strand & one new strand
3
Q
What is the importance of DNA replication
A
- ensures continuity of genetic information between generations
4
Q
Describe the process of DNA replication
A
- DNA helicase breaks H2 bonds between complimentary bases
- Allows unwinding of double helix
- Free DNA nucleotides attracted to exposed bases & form complimentary base pairs through H2 bonding
- A pairs with T and C pairs with G
- Phosphodiester bonds formed by condensation reactions between adjacent free nucleotides
- Catalysed by DNA polymerase
