Grid Search

Tell me about it / characteristics?

A

Extremely thorough technique that can be used in high & low visibility to find small objects
Should be used for evidence recovery or any time precise location data is required for found object
Characteristics;
-Requires extremely experienced divers
-Requires times consuming set-up
-Two or more grids must be placed before beginning
-Used to find objects less than 1CUFT or because the color matches the bottom
-Used with other searches to cover large area
-Can use in Good or Bad visibility
-Used when the current is less than 1 knot
-Slowest but most thorough of searches

16
Q

Are Coast Guard Divers equipped to preform search dives for ordinance in open water (Sea Mines)?

A

No, Sea mines have magnetic triggers that could be detonated by standard Coast Guard Diving equipment

17
Q

What is the probability of success determined by in bottom searches?

A

1- Accuracy of the location
2- Bouncy of Object
3- Local current

18
Q

Vessels can do what protective measure to help minimize potential damage caused by a UHD?

A

Compartment flooding. Vessels must decide if protective measures outweighs the damage caused by the UHD

19
Q

As a general rule of thumb, for small devices such as a limpet a _______ safety zone is appropriate ?

A

200 yards

20
Q

When marking a potential UHD on a vertical surface where do you attach?

A

Above, or outboard and down current from potential device

21
Q

What UHD is designated fir placement inside piping exposed to the sea?

A

The Soviet SPM

22
Q

What are light sensor firing systems LEAST responsive too?

A

Blue or Violet light

23
Q

Is diver safe standoff distance data available for small limpet sized charges?

A

No data available

24
Q

All UHD’s should be expected to operate on what?

A

A timer

25
Q

The changing of water pressure increases the

opportunity of POIS or barotrama during what search?

A

Vertical Pile Search

26
Q

What should be in the water any time divers are operating in medium current>

A

A chase boat

27
Q

What kind of search is done prior to the arrival of a high value asset to ensure no UHD have been placed during periods of lessoned security?

A

Pier search

28
Q

Circle Search
Tell me about it?
Equipment needed for it? (4 things)

A

Suited for locating small objects
-May be preformed by less experienced divers
-Works well in open water with minimal current
-Is the easiest method to support from a boat
Equipment;
-Clump Line
-Bouys
-Weighted index line
-Search Line on a real or H-Board

29
Q

Semi Circle- Circle Search
Tell me about it?
What equipment is needed?

A

-Can be used in murky water
-Fairly Quick
-May be conducted from shore or boat
-Comms may be conducting with pull signals
Equipment;
-A signal line to attach to diver
-At least one U/W compass is suggested

30
Q

Are Coast Guard Divers trained or equipped to preform quick-step or render safe procedures (RSP) on ordnance?

A

No, only qualified EOD possess that capability

31
Q
Floating Buoys (Vertical Necklace) Pier Search
Equipment needed?
A

1- Buoy
2- Through-water comms are recommended to improve coordination
3- Necklace Line

32
Q

Vertical Piling Search

Equipment needed?

A

A optional guide line used to move from 1 piling to t he next. Begin the search up current and use the guide line to move down.

33
Q

What risk are there when diving around piers and berths?

Risk and Safety Hazards?

A

The risk of entanglement, lack of free access to the surface, crushing hazards must be carefully evaluated prior to commencing the dive
