3150.2 Flashcards
How many hull searches are there and what are they?
There are 4 different hull searches; 1-Jack Stay 2-Two Diver 3-Necklace & Half Necklace 4-Floating Buoy (Modified Necklace)
Why should buoys not be used with the full-necklace search technique?
It will prevent diver from surfacing in an emergency situation
Floating Buoy (Modified Necklace) Hull Search
Tell me about it?
Characteristics?
Equipment Needed?
May be preformed by 1 or 2 divers when not enough personnel are available to complete a half or full necklace search. Characteristics; -Minimal set-up time -Divers sweep 1 side of hull at a time Equipment Needed; -Necklace line -Comms recommended to improve coordination -Buoy
Necklace Hull Search / Half Necklace
Tell me about it?
Characteristics?
Equipment Needed?
Most rapid when adequate number of divers are available.
Characteristics;
-Minimal Set-Up Time
-Requires large number of divers
-Significant practice is required to coordinate with a large number of divers
-Divers sweep one side of hull at a time
Equipment Needed;
-Necklace line
-Through-Water comms recommended to improve coordination
-Buoy may be used with the half necklace search
Two Diver Hull Search
Tell me about it?
Characteristics?
Equipment Needed?
Can be used in murky water suited for locating small objects.
Characteristics;
-Requires significant time set up
-Tender must be stationed on the vessel
-Divers sweep one side of the hull at a time
Equipment Needed;
-Two hogging lines
Jackstay Hull Search
Tell me about it?
Characteristics?
Equipment Needed?
Can be preformed by one diver or buddy pair
Can be used in murky water & suited for finding small objects
Characteristics;
-Requires significant time to set-up
-Buddy pair search most often best technique
-Tender must be stationed on vessel
-Diver sweep one side of hull at a time
Equipment Needed;
-Two hogging lines
-One jackstay line
-Metal Magnetics can be used in line of clove hitch for searching the jackstay line
When repositioning hogging lines or tending lines what must personnel ensure they don’t snag?
Limpet Mines
How many Bottom Searches are there and what are there names?
There are 7 different Bottom Searches 1-Semi-Circle 2-Circle 3-In-Line 4-Jackstay 5-Grid 6-Free-Swimming ((CS)(PS)(ES)) 7-Towed
Towed Search
Tell me about it?
Characteristics?
Equipment Needed?
The fastest search, most effective in optimal conditions when looking for large reflective objects
Characteristics;
-Requires extremely experienced Divers
-Only effective during daylight
-Minimal planning and set-up required
-May be preformed with one or more divers
-Requires excellent visibility
Equipment Needed;
-Plane board (preferably with built in SDG)
-Tow Line
-FFM with through water communications
Free Swimming Search
Tell me about it?
Characteristics?
Equipment Needed?
Used in good visibility to locate medium or large objects Expanding Square (ES) -High confidence in search datam
Parallel Search (PS)- Low confidence in object and location
Creeping Lines (CS) - Difficult search because of number of turns requires
Characteristics;
-Requires extremely experienced divers
-Minimal planning with one or more divers
Equipment Needed;
-Compass
Grid Search
Tell me about equipment needed? (5 things)
1-Buoys-minimum of 8
2-Clump lines
3-Bottom markers (Must be highly visible)
4-Compasses
5-Diver Boat with positioning equipment for placing clump lines
Grid Search
Tell me about it / characteristics?
Extremely thorough technique that can be used in high & low visibility to find small objects
Should be used for evidence recovery or any time precise location data is required for found object
Characteristics;
-Requires extremely experienced divers
-Requires times consuming set-up
-Two or more grids must be placed before beginning
-Used to find objects less than 1CUFT or because the color matches the bottom
-Used with other searches to cover large area
-Can use in Good or Bad visibility
-Used when the current is less than 1 knot
-Slowest but most thorough of searches
What will dictate the size of a search pattern?
On scene conditions and available equipment
Jackstay Search
Tell me about it?
Equipment needed?
Extremely through search technique. Can be used in 0 visibility and used to find small objects -Requires experienced divers -Requires time-consuming set-up -Slow execution Equipment -Two 50 yard grid line -One 25 yard jackstay line -4 buoys -Compasses -Dive Boat with positioning equipment for placing clump lines
In-Line Search
Tell me about it?
Equipment needed? (6 things)
Can be used to find small-medium sized objects in low visibility. -Requires experienced divers -Requires time consuming set-up -slow execution Equipment 1-Two 50 yard grid lines 2-One 25 yard search line 3-Four buoys 4-Four clump lines 5-Compasses 6-Dive Boat with positioning equipment for placing clump lines
Are Coast Guard Divers equipped to preform search dives for ordinance in open water (Sea Mines)?
No, Sea mines have magnetic triggers that could be detonated by standard Coast Guard Diving equipment
What is the probability of success determined by in bottom searches?
1- Accuracy of the location
2- Bouncy of Object
3- Local current
Vessels can do what protective measure to help minimize potential damage caused by a UHD?
Compartment flooding. Vessels must decide if protective measures outweighs the damage caused by the UHD
As a general rule of thumb, for small devices such as a limpet a _______ safety zone is appropriate ?
200 yards
When marking a potential UHD on a vertical surface where do you attach?
Above, or outboard and down current from potential device
What UHD is designated fir placement inside piping exposed to the sea?
The Soviet SPM
What are light sensor firing systems LEAST responsive too?
Blue or Violet light
Is diver safe standoff distance data available for small limpet sized charges?
No data available
All UHD’s should be expected to operate on what?
A timer
The changing of water pressure increases the
opportunity of POIS or barotrama during what search?
Vertical Pile Search
What should be in the water any time divers are operating in medium current>
A chase boat
What kind of search is done prior to the arrival of a high value asset to ensure no UHD have been placed during periods of lessoned security?
Pier search
Circle Search
Tell me about it?
Equipment needed for it? (4 things)
Suited for locating small objects
-May be preformed by less experienced divers
-Works well in open water with minimal current
-Is the easiest method to support from a boat
Equipment;
-Clump Line
-Bouys
-Weighted index line
-Search Line on a real or H-Board
Semi Circle- Circle Search
Tell me about it?

-Can be used in murky water
-Fairly Quick
-May be conducted from shore or boat
-Comms may be conducting with pull signals
Equipment;
-A signal line to attach to diver
-At least one U/W compass is suggested
Are Coast Guard Divers trained or equipped to preform quick-step or render safe procedures (RSP) on ordnance?
No, only qualified EOD possess that capability
Floating Buoys (Vertical Necklace) Pier Search Equipment needed?
1- Buoy

What risk are there when diving around piers and berths?
Risk and Safety Hazards?
The risk of entanglement, lack of free access to the surface, crushing hazards must be carefully evaluated prior to commencing the dive
