3.1.4 Qualitative analysis Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the test for halide ions
A
- add nitric acid (to remove carbonates)
- add silver nitrate solution
- coloured precipitate forms if halide is present
2
Q
Give the precipitate formed for chloride ions (and result with ammonia)
A
white precipitate
-dissolves in a dilute ammonia solution
3
Q
Give the precipitate formed for bromide ions (and result with ammonia)
A
cream precipitate
- dissolves in a concentrated ammonia solution
4
Q
Give the precipitate formed for iodide ions (and result with ammonia)
A
yellow precipitate
- does not dissolve
5
Q
Describe the test for carbonate ions
A
- add any dilute acid
- bubble through limewater
- if it turns cloudy (from carbon dioxide gas) a carbonate is present
6
Q
Describe the test for sulfate ions
A
- add hydrochloric acid (reacts with any carbonate impurities)
- add aqueousbarium chloride/nitrate solution
- white precipitate forms if sulfate ions are present
7
Q
Describe the test for ammonium ions
A
- add sodium hydroxide
- warm
- test gas with damp red litmus - should turn blue if gaseous ammonia has been produced
ammonia also has a strong smell
