the franklin river
The HEC (hydro- electricity commissions) wanted to damn franklin river due to the fear that Tasmania would run out of power.
positives on the issue
by making this hydro. power plant, it would provide jobs, stimulate economy and provide cheap, clean and unlimited power.
TWS formation
Tasmanian wilderness society was formed when lake Pedder action committee (LPAC) and south-west Tasmanian action committee came together to start their campaign on stopping the damming of the river.
what occurred
due to strongly opposing this idea, the campaign caused pressure to point on politicians in both the state and federal sectors, which forced the, to create and modify policies to remain in power.
specific example of what occurred
Don Chipp went down to the river to actually see and try to understand why the campaign was happening, this caused him to gain a positive perception towards the river, and now he wanted to help save and protect this river.

1978 - Tasmanian hydro-electricity commissions announced their plans to damn the river, and immediately after the TWS announced their program to raise awareness on the issue.

(1980)
10,000 people marched through the streets of Hobart demanding an end to the project, to which Doug Lowe proposed a project that would save most of the river from being dammed, but was soon after rejected by environmental groups.

the state government held a referendum to where the original damning plan won. this created a period of chaos, Bob Brown for example, was the leader of TWS and started a blockade to which many were arrested

Bob Hawk, newly prime ministers first action was to stop the damning of the Franklin river, and create a world heritage area over the site to which government’s ignored.
eventually the issue was brought to high court and resolved to end the construction of the franklin river.
